Three and a half years ago I saw an ad in The Reporter. Concordia Publishing House was looking for writers for its new day school religion curriculum. I had used many of their materials as a classroom teacher, so I typed up a resume, (maybe my second one ever,) and sent it in. I was shocked, SHOCKED I tell you, when I received an e-mail asking if I would be interested in writing a couple lessons for the first grade curriculum. Um, YEAH I would!
I so enjoyed the work! I was writing not simply for the schools that I love, but also for the people that I love. I thought numerous times about how old my nieces and nephews would be when the curriculum was finally published and released and purchased by their schools. I snuck the names and baptism birthdays of some of my favorite people into my lessons.
I got to work on the new One in Christ series for two years before I brought my kids home for school and had to say no to taking on any more lessons. The first and second grade materials were released just in time for me to be able to use them with my own girls in our homeschool classroom last year. And, although I was thrilled with the opportunity I had been given, I was a little sad that my work on this project was finished.
Then, another e-mail arrived. Would I be able to write some of the companion stories, the big books, for the preschool curriculum? It was a shorter assignment and my name would be in the books. Right after the words, "Written by" it would say...me. Um, YES again!
And finally, today, this package came in the mail...
and these were inside...
and they each said, "Written by..." and then there was my name! Crazy!
Well, we immediately dropped everything else we had been working on, and I made my children sit down and listen as I read. The girls followed along, pitching in as they were prompted by each story. Chief sat in the back saying things like, "Oh, I get what you were going for there," and snapping pictures.
My head is going to be big and fat for a day or so and then I'm sure it will shrink down to normal size once again. But, while we're waiting for that to happen...anybody want to win a book?
Let's do this...If you are not a follower of Dandelions Picked, go and "Like" my Facebook page, and I'll enter your name into a drawing for your choice of one new big book (Crossing the Red Sea, Jonah and the Big Fish, or Daniel and the Lions' Den) signed by me.
If you are already a follower, just share this post on your own wall, and let me know you've done it, and I'll enter your name too.
Want an extra entry? Leave a comment below telling us what you would write, in addition to your name, when signing a book you wrote. Be creative!
I'll have my lovely assistants draw a name on March 18th.
That way your new book should arrive before Easter!
Happy Reading!

ReplyDeleteJust like our student teaching days! Ooo, I'm a little queasy now. Thank you Marisa!
DeleteWhat fun! I'm going to go share on my page right now!
ReplyDeleteThanks Pam!
DeleteThat is so cool, Heather. I'll be able to tell my grandkids "I knew her before...." I like to write or remind the kids at Salem to "Be a Blessing" - (faith in action) - Karen
ReplyDeleteLovely Karen! You are a true example of what it means to be a blessing! Thank you!
DeleteMy favorite with our Sunday School children is "This is the day the Lord has made. Rejoice and be glad in it." I often wondered if the girls were able to go to the LWML meeting while you were gone. I was so impressed with their eagerness to attend. You are mentoring them well. Mary
ReplyDeleteMary, they ended up having another activity that night, but they will be starting up again this month right along with me. They do love it, and I'm happy to foster that willingness to be involved. "This is the day the Lord has made"...Yes!
DeleteI'm a new follower on FB! I'm so impress with the quality of those books! They are beautiful. Where can I buy them if I don't win? I would write, Psalm 127:3 :)
ReplyDeleteJanine, you can find them at Concordia Publishing House. www.cph.org
Delete"Children are a heritage from the Lord." Very nice!
Grace, Peace, & Mercy upon all of your days!
ReplyDelete:) I got my Crossing of the Red Sea... we read it last night to Paige! She liked it, and so did we! Although it's Ella's Easter gift! :)
Great job friend!
Oh, I like that one Julie! I am glad you liked it, and hope Ella does too. Thank you!
DeleteI just liked your page! I'd write "Choose to be thankful and courageous."
ReplyDeleteOoh, that's good too! Thanks Donna!
DeleteI liked your page!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would ever write a book, not with the intentions of it being published. But I've written several allegories for the 8-12 yr group. Sadly they're not that great and are currently sitting in a file, somewhere. :)
I love the nice large size of your books. Perfect for group reading and there is no chance of some-one complaining that they cannot see the pictures :)
Congrats Heather - you must be giddy with joy!
ReplyDeleteThe books look beautiful and will be a blessing to many!
Thanks for sharing your joy at Inspire Me Monday!
